Claims-Free
Madelyn Flannagan of the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America says the home insurance equivalent of a good-driver discount is gaining popularity among insurers. "People who have been claims-free for 10 years can get a 20 percent discount," she says. "I think of a lot of companies are trying to reward longevity. " Even if you have a claim, you could still be rewarded for your loyalty.
New Home or Renovation
Many insurers offer discounts for new or renovated homes, because new fixtures, appliances and systems are less likely to malfunction, reducing the risk of damage to the home. Detection
Updating your home with "smart" devices could also qualify for insurance credits. In addition to motion-detecting security systems, new "smart" sensors can prevents a claim by detecting a gas or water leak, and either emitting an alarm or shutting off the system. Sean Meehan of Travelers Insurance says, "Gas and water sensors are a great credit"
