Columbia County is growing by leaps and bounds. This is evident by
the growing traffic, filled classrooms and overcrowded buses. It is
getting so crowded, Columbia County is now rezoning many schools to help
give the students some room but the plans are constantly changing. For
more information on Columbia County schools, view

Since no new schools are opening right now, the rezoning is more of a
shift. This is the first time Columbia County has rezoned like this and
some residents are having to get used to it. Many families choose where
they live by the school system. For more information on neighborhoods in

They want there child to attend the best school they can and with the
rezoning plan, many residence are not too happy. Columbia County Board
of Education Chairman Regina Buccafusco said “If we don’t shift some
student out of there, we’ll have over 1,300 student in that school thats
made for 900. That’s a whole extra school on that campus. “, talking
about Baker Place Elementary. While some are unhappy about the decision,
others are expressing appreciation that Columbia County are keeping
parents informed and are including them in the decision making process.
“That shows you what kind of board we have, that they listen and the
things they say aren’t just for talk. They really want to take the input
from families in Columbia County,” a parent said. Families will have
their chance to speak again at two public meeting in January. One thing
is certain, Augusta is growing, and that’s a good thing!
As
of January 27, there has been revision and correction to the planned
rezoning. At its regularly scheduled meeting January 27, 2015, the Board
of Education approved this rezoning proposal with the following
stipulations:
-The high school rezoning proposals which were set to take place 2017-2018 has been moved up one year to 2016-2017.
-New
students moving into the rezoned areas will be given the option to
enroll in either school for the remainder of this year, in an effort to
minimize their disruption.
-Transportation to and from school of students deciding to take advantage of a waiver must provide there own.
-All
students affected by the 2015-2016 rezoning presently in high school
