According
to one variance of the legend, a traveling preacher wasn’t granted
permission to preach at the market and cursed the market, uttering “that
a great wind would destroy the place except for one pillar and that
whoever tried to remove this remaining pillar would be struck dead,''
according to the Year Book of the City Council of Augusta, Georgia, of 1977. When the storm blew through and the market was destroyed with the pillar left standing, the legend was born.
Once the market was destroyed local towns people decided not to immediately build on the spot. "Now that the Market House is in ruins, we think it may be opportune to suggest that it never be rebuilt upon the same spot," a local was heard saying. This legend has been passed down through the generation, most likely being exaggerated but just to be safe, don’t touch the haunted pillar in Augusta Ga.
